Registration of FIR

This is a Supreme Court judgment on whether a police officer is bound to register an FIR upon receiving any information relating to commission of a cognizable offence or the police officer has the power to conduct a preliminary inquiry to confirm such information before registering the FIR. The Court held that Section 154 of the CrPC makes it mandatory to register an FIR on receipt of any information.
